The Lockdown Woods
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought us all difficult times with many painful losses. Newbury Friends of the Earth is running the Lockdown Woods project which aims to turn the grief felt by our community into something beautiful. We have already planted three new memorial woodlands in West Berkshire which we hope to expand into 2021. Read on to find out more about our progress and how you and your family can be involved in the future.
We are very grateful to Newbury Town Council, Greenham Parish council, West Bershire Council, Growing Newbury Green plus Hungerford Town and Manor for generous support which enabled this project to go ahead as planned over 2020/21.
Have you been bereaved during the pandemic? People sometimes find it gives some comfort to dedicate a tree to a loved one. The Lockdown Woods project can perhaps help - you now have the chance to choose a special tree in Goldwell Park, Newbury for a dedication this spring.
You can hold your own private dedication ceremony there, and watch the tree grow over the years as a living reminder of the love and friendship you shared. Check out our Get Involved page to learn more or drop us an email.
Homegrown Sapling Re-register open now!
For those who have been following the Lockdown Woods project from the very start (Spring 2020), you will know we asked members of the public to go out into their gardens and look for saplings for our new woodlands. Unfortunately, due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in Autumn 2020, we were not able to plant out our homegrown saplings.
It brings me great joy to announce that we are now able to start planning for their planting this Autumn, finally, after a year of meticulous and careful nurturing from our dedicated tree guardians. As many may have perished over winter or others may have grown over the threshold for being planted of 50cm, we are requesting anyone with saplings at home to re-register your saplings in our short form. This can be found on the right side of our 'get involved' tab (please note: if viewing on mobile, it is roughly half way down the page after quite a bit of scrolling!). We are starting fresh with our database, so please don't worry about double-registering. We will not be currently taking location requests for saplings but this may change at a later date when we have more site details. We will be in touch at the end of summer to arrange COVID secure planting sessions. Many thanks for your time!
At this time, we are not asking for new saplings to be collected and regrettably will not be able to plant out any saplings that do not reach 50cm.
